What is Character Counter?

A character counter counts the number of characters in a text string in real time, providing writers, developers, marketers, and SEO professionals with the precise length information they need for character-limited contexts. Many of the most common writing tasks have strict character limits: Twitter/X posts (280 characters), Instagram captions (2,200 characters), Facebook posts (63,206 characters), SMS messages (160 characters per segment), meta description tags (150–160 characters for optimal SEO), page title tags (50–60 characters for optimal SEO), Google Ads headlines (30 characters), and YouTube video titles (100 characters). The Character Counter provides counts for characters with spaces (the most common counting method), characters without spaces, word count, line count, sentence count, and byte length (which differs from character count for non-ASCII text like emoji or Chinese characters). Platform-specific character limit indicators help you see at a glance whether your text fits within the target context.

How to Use Character Counter

1. Type or paste your text into the input area — all counts update instantly as you type.
2. Check the character count (with and without spaces) in the metrics panel on the right.
3. Select a platform preset (Twitter, Instagram, Meta Description, Title Tag) to see a live limit indicator.
4. The limit bar turns yellow when you approach the limit and red when you exceed it.
5. Use the byte counter for contexts where byte length matters, such as database varchar fields.
