What is Word Counter?

A word counter counts the number of words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and lines in a body of text, providing writers, students, editors, and content creators with essential metrics for their work. Word count is a fundamental requirement across many contexts: academic essays and research papers have minimum and maximum word count requirements, social media platforms enforce character limits, search engine optimization relies on content length guidelines, freelance writing projects are priced per word, and publishing contracts specify word count targets. The Word Counter goes beyond a simple count — it calculates an estimated reading time based on the average adult reading speed of 200–250 words per minute, counts unique words to give a vocabulary diversity metric, identifies the most frequently used words for keyword density analysis, and provides character counts both with and without spaces. All counting happens in real time as you type or paste text, with no need to click a button.

How to Use Word Counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the input area — word and character counts update instantly as you type.
  2. Review the live metrics panel: words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, and lines.
  3. Check the estimated reading time to gauge how long your content will take to consume.
  4. Scroll down to the keyword frequency table to see which words appear most often in your text.
  5. Use the Clear button to reset the editor and start counting a new piece of text.
  6. Copy your text back out with the Copy button if you have edited it in the counter.
